The Calgary Flames shared news of two-year contract renewals for their general manager, Craig Conroy, along with other key executives, this past Friday. The organization clarified that these extensions were agreed upon prior to the current season’s commencement.
Conroy, aged 54, ascended to the position of GM in 2023, succeeding Brad Treliving after his departure for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Before this promotion, Conroy served as the assistant general manager.
“I appreciate the chance to keep steering this hockey team,” Conroy expressed in a public statement Friday.
“Over the past couple of years, we’ve taken significant forward steps, and I have faith in this team’s atmosphere. We’re optimistic regarding what lies ahead, and we’re all dedicated to doing our utmost to achieve triumphs for this organization.”
Team president Don Maloney, senior vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager Dave Nonis, along with vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager Brad Pascall, are also under contract alongside Conroy, all secured until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season.
The projected opening date for Calgary’s new arena, Scotia Place, is set for the autumn of 2027.
Conroy, a native of Potsdam, N.Y., spent nine of his 16 NHL seasons competing for the Flames before transitioning into management roles.
The Flames, holding a record of 8 wins, 14 losses, and 3 ties, held the second-to-last rank in the NHL standings leading up to Friday’s match against the Florida Panthers, the current Stanley Cup titleholders.
Since Conroy’s promotion to GM, Calgary has amassed a record of 87 wins, 80 losses, and 22 ties.
The Flames haven’t participated in the playoffs since the year 2022.
Earlier this year, they barely missed securing a post-season berth, finding themselves on the unfavorable end of a tiebreaker for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Calgary’s senior management roster also encompasses assistant GM Peter Hanlon, senior director of hockey operations Mike Burke, as well as Jarome Iginla, who fulfills the role of special advisor to Conroy.
