Nigel Davies, a past coach and skipper for Wales, has rejoined the Scarlets team, stepping into an interim director of rugby position effective immediately.
The ex-Wales centre, who earned 29 caps, has arrived at Parc y Scarlets subsequent to Leigh Jones’ exit as rugby performance director, as the club currently occupies the bottom spot in the United Rugby Championship standings and has yet to secure a win in the Investec Champions Cup.
This occasion signifies Davies’ reintegration into his previous club after over ten years, having coached the squad from 2008 to 2012 prior to his move to Gloucester. Additionally, he served as a caretaker head coach for Wales during a single match in 2007.
Davies is set to collaborate closely with head coach Dwayne Peel, operating “within a cohesive performance structure”.
Their initial task together involves orchestrating a triumph against Northampton Saints, who were runners-up in the Champions Cup last season, at Franklin’s Gardens this coming Sunday.
Davies articulated, “The objective here is to introduce distinctness, coherence, and steadiness to the rugby initiative.”
He further stated, “I will assume complete responsibility for outputs and outcomes, establish unambiguous benchmarks for our play and conduct, and guarantee an atmosphere conducive to player and coach performance. My primary aim is to streamline communications, solidify the Scarlets’ distinctiveness and principles, and foster circumstances for enhanced achievements, both immediately and in the future.
Davies continued, “The Scarlets have consistently maintained a robust and esteemed rugby character, possessing a profound rugby legacy and ingrained principles and customs. The organization is deeply integrated into the cultural fabric of communities throughout West Wales. This club has consistently excelled at achieving significant victories despite challenges, which electrifies our supporters and motivates upcoming generations of athletes in the sport. The diligent effort persists with a skilled roster of players, and I anticipate contributing my encouragement and impetus to the squad for the rest of this season.”
Simon Muderack, the executive chairman, commented: “This represents a calculated choice by the Board to reinforce our rugby performance frameworks for the duration of the current season. We are pleased and appreciative that Nigel has consented to come back to Parc y Scarlets to guide and assist the rugby setting during this pivotal phase of our season, especially as Welsh rugby is engaged in a demanding and comprehensive assessment.”
He elaborated, “As a stalwart of this organization, Nigel possesses a demonstrated history of instigating strategic transformations and solidifying high-achieving cultures and methodologies. We are confident that his extensive rugby acumen, background, and enthusiasm for our club and for Welsh rugby will markedly invigorate our strategy and impetus for the remainder of the season, whilst also aiding in sparking our rugby prospects.”
Muderack concluded, “Every individual within our club remains entirely dedicated to enhancing outcomes and witnessing our squad compete with a distinct Scarlets character, ensuring our faithful and devoted stakeholders and fans have ample reasons for celebration throughout the remainder of this season.”
