Foster Drops WBC 135 Shot, Targets Navarrete–Nunez Winner

O’Shaquie Foster has relinquished his temporary WBC lightweight championship, aiming for a three-title unification bout in the super featherweight division (130 lbs).

The Rationale Behind Moving to 130

Foster, the reigning WBC super featherweight titleholder, seeks to challenge the victor of the upcoming unification contest featuring WBO champion Emanuel Navarrete and IBF champion Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez, with the goal of unifying titles.

According to Dan Rafael, Foster (24-3, 12 KOs) made the decision to abandon his provisional WBC 135-lb championship today. This is perceived as a sagacious decision given the lack of viable prospects for him in the lightweight category.

Shakur Stevenson, the WBC champion, is pursuing lucrative contests at 140 lbs and potentially 147 lbs thereafter. He has not indicated any desire to revert to the 135-lb division. Given O’Shaquie’s presence and readiness to compete, Stevenson has even fewer incentives to come back. While he often speaks of confronting top-tier opponents, his selection of adversaries is highly deliberate.

His choice of opponents is far from consistently facing the elite. A bout against Foster would have compelled Shakur to substantiate his claims, yet he displayed no inclination to demonstrate his capabilities. Foster’s choice to revert to the 130-lb division, where he maintains his WBC championship, was judicious.

Provisional Strategy for Herrera–Nunez

The contest between Jadier Herrera and Ricardo Nunez is now anticipated to feature the provisional WBC lightweight championship on the line once it is rescheduled.

Last Saturday night, December 6th, at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, Foster secured a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Stephen Fulton. This triumph established Foster as the compulsory challenger for WBC champion Shakur Stevenson.

Nevertheless, Stevenson promptly articulated his reluctance to face Foster, initially stating that he had already fulfilled a mandatory defense against William Zepeda on July 12th of the current year. Subsequently, Shakur issued a threat to relinquish his WBC title. These actions solidified the understanding that Foster would not be granted an opportunity to compete against him.

It was revealing to observe Stevenson not merely avoiding Foster, but also his general unwillingness to undertake career risks at this juncture, unless substantial financial compensation is involved.
