Fred Warner is disputing claims that a highly aggressive bid to strip the ball led to one of the most unusual injuries of the San Francisco 49ers’ summer practices.
During only the second day of training camp back in July, ball carrier Jordan James sustained broken ribs—a highly uncommon setback given that the team was not yet practicing in full pads.

Footage later emerged online that seemed to capture Warner swiping at the ball in James’ hands, leading many to assume the All-Pro defender had inadvertently struck his teammate’s midsection while attempting a punchout.
On Tuesday, Warner spoke out about the situation, clarifying that the widely shared recording did not document the actual play where James got hurt.
“Regarding that particular play, I’m aware of the footage going around with me and Jordan, but that was not when his injury occurred,” Warner explained. “It was really just a bad-luck collision between the two of us while we weren’t wearing pads. I wasn’t trying to deliberately strike the ball away from him.”
Clarifying this detail is important because the accident was rapidly being characterized as teammate-on-teammate damage stemming from Warner’s signature defensive style.

Interim head coach Chris Foerster had earlier labeled the event a “perfect storm,” noting that an attempt to strip the ball coupled with James turning around resulted in a clumsy clash.
The timing of the setback could not have been more unfortunate for James.
The developing ball carrier started camp aiming to secure a backup spot behind Christian McCaffrey, and his absence on the field has allowed rookie Kaelon Black to make strides in the depth chart battle.
At the same time, Warner continues to establish the aggressive tempo for a San Francisco defense that has rapidly reclaimed its fierce reputation.
Recently arrived defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa noted that the veteran linebacker possesses a “menacing aura,” a reputation Warner has built over years of uncompromising, high-impact performances.
There is no toning down how Warner plays the game. However, in this specific instance, he maintains that the painful outcome was entirely accidental.
