It’s common to hear tales of esports professionals transitioning into streaming, showcasing luxury vehicles, and engaging in public personal issues. Alternatively, some esports veterans become coaches and analysts, continuing their visible presence in the scene.

However, the less publicized narratives hold greater intrigue: the past professional player and commentator now in medical equipment sales, the ex-collectible card game competitor in financial futures, the veteran LCS player currently marketing high-end residences in Beverly Hills. It appears far more striking to exit the esports sphere, where they were specialized public figures, to engage in what we would deem “ordinary” professions.

This presents an unusual hurdle: how to adapt an existence shaped within esports for an environment that frequently lacks comprehension of it.

Alberto “Crumbz” Rengifo is intimately familiar with this adaptation dilemma. Following ten years in League of Legends , serving as both a competitor and a broadcast commentator, he transitioned into a sector with minimal common ground.

“My current role is in business-to-business sales, specifically dealing in emergency medical provisions and health apparatus,” he communicated to Esports Insider. This career shift happened rapidly. “Upon my return to Canada from the United States, this presented an outstanding, immediate chance after my previous work in solar energy sales.”

Such a change appears to be among the most radical possible. Yet, Crumbz discovered that the fundamental competencies involved were surprisingly recognizable.

“Having faith in the methodology and persistent effort is utterly crucial in sales,” Crumbz stated. “Moreover, your aptitude for teamwork across different divisions is fundamental to achieving positive outcomes.”

These statements could easily characterize an esports squad analyzing practice matches post-defeat, except the current objectives involve sales targets, customers, and interdepartmental alignment, replacing tactical drafting and live competition.

This highlights a truth consistently recognized within the esports community, yet often overlooked by those outside: the advantages derived from a professional gaming career are undeniably legitimate. Sustained practice of a single game for ten hours daily over multiple years demands significant self-control. Additionally, there’s the requirement to perform effectively under duress, with spectators offering encouragement (or criticism). The abilities in identifying trends, strategic planning, collaborative effort… these are distinctly not confined to just a League of Legends contest.

“It is imperative to master the art of presenting your esports background as a pertinent, advantageous professional history,” Crumbz stated. “Few individuals in conventional society are aware of, or invested in, esports. It becomes your responsibility to convey its significance to them.”

This constitutes one of the most challenging aspects. Although the former professional might discern the links between competitive performance and corporate employment, they are now among individuals entirely unfamiliar with the concept of esports. Having been a notable personality in an exciting, expanding field, one becomes merely an ordinary individual within an office environment.

Andy “Smoothie” Ta dedicated over a decade to top-tier North American League of Legends competition, participating in two global championships and contending in national finals alongside premier teams (including TSM). In 2024, he concluded his playing career and obtained his certification in property sales.

The initial period following this career change proved unsettling.

“During the initial months subsequent to my retirement, I experienced a profound sense of disorientation,” Smoothie confessed to Esports Insider. “I had invested more than ten years constructing an identity centered on being Smoothie. Notwithstanding this, Smoothie declared that he intentionally bypassed the most apparent subsequent career paths.

“I rejected the predictable options, such as coaching, live broadcasting, or content creation, as none of them resonated as an investment in my own future,” he explained. “They resembled remaining in an unlit room.”

Instead, he opted for a profession that instilled fear in him.

“My transition into high-end property in Beverly Hills was driven by trepidation,” he stated. “My knowledge base was nearly nonexistent, I was compelled to undertake a complete fresh start, and the learning process proved exceedingly demanding.”

Success manifested rapidly: substantial transaction figures, an award for new talent, and validation that disciplined competitive practices can endure beyond the gaming environment.

“Smoothie cultivated the commitment to effort,” he remarked. “Andy is now applying it.”

He distinctly recognized the influence of his tenure as a League of Legends professional on his property career. This proved to be an unexpectedly fluid transition, despite the apparent stark differences between the two fields. Yet, being an esports player involves more than just quick reflexes. The proficiencies acquired are not solely confined to gaming. Indeed, they can seemingly aid in the sale of residences.

“The paramount abilities I carried into my real estate career were discernment of patterns, collaborative effort, and interpersonal exchange,” he shared. “An early mentor in my competitive days advised me to target a mere one percent improvement daily. I have consistently followed that guidance.”

Furthermore, there’s a paradox in how a former profession gains fresh significance once it appears to be concluded. Smoothie noted that his clients frequently express great interest in his prior life. What do you mean, individuals are dedicating themselves to practicing a video game? What do you mean, crowds are applauding and countless viewers are tuning in from around the globe? It’s a completely distinct realm, one some people were entirely unaware existed. You traveled globally with a squad, vying for substantial earnings on a worldwide platform? And now you are present, facilitating my home purchase??

Within the esports sector, such a curriculum vitae might seem commonplace among peers. However, esports remains a specialized field, a contained environment. Externally, it serves as a distinguishing factor. It can either assist in assimilating into the professional landscape or evolve into a memorable narrative for others.
