Gauff Wins Wuhan Open, Defeats Pegula

The victor of Roland Garros, participating for the second time in the Wuhan Open, fell behind 3-0 in the second set. However, she rallied to narrow the score to 5-3 before securing four consecutive games, ultimately winning the match.

With the score at 5-4, Pegula had an opportunity to extend the match to a decisive final set while serving. Nevertheless, Gauff, displaying unwavering determination, broke her serve decisively.

“You’re known for your three-set matches,” she said to Pegula on the court, “so I was resolved to prevent it from reaching a third set today because I believed you would have an advantage in that scenario.”

In her previous eight matches at the Wuhan Open, Pegula had been involved in final-set tiebreakers. In contrast, Gauff had concluded all of her matches in straight sets.

“It’s a privilege to compete against you, as a friend and fellow American in the final,” Pegula said appreciatively.

“This marks our first final together, making it a delightful experience to participate.”
