GB’s Evans falls in Melbourne qualifying opener

For the second consecutive year, British player Dan Evans failed to secure a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open, exiting during the initial qualifying stage held in Melbourne.

The veteran athlete, aged 35, experienced difficulties with his serve, leading to a straight-sets loss of 6-1, 6-2 against Japan’s Rei Sakamoto.

During the 66-minute match that ended in his loss, Evans, a former top-ranked British player, committed four double faults and was unable to generate any break point opportunities.

His only Grand Slam participation the previous year occurred at Wimbledon, where he received a wildcard entry directly into the main competition.

Other British players, including Jay Clarke and Jack Pinnington Jones, also suffered straight-set defeats in their opening qualifying matches, and Oliver Crawford was beaten 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 by Daniel Merida Aguilar of Spain.

In contrast, Arthur Fery and George Loffhagen achieved more favorable outcomes; Fery triumphed over Australia’s Edward Winter with scores of 6-2, 6-4, while Loffhagen defeated Germany’s Justin Engel in two tie-break sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

Competitors must successfully navigate three qualifying stages to advance into the main tournament bracket, which is scheduled to commence on Sunday, January 18.
