It appears the Memphis Grizzlies have decided against transferring Ja Morant before the NBA’s transaction cut-off, notwithstanding earlier rumors about a possible exchange.
Reports indicated that the Memphis franchise had explored trading the 26-year-old floor general, yet failed to secure an appropriate counterpart. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, even with some initial interest, no clubs were prepared to “present a compelling proposal.”
Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports stated on Wednesday that the Sacramento Kings showed the greatest interest in Morant, alongside the Miami Heat who also participated in discussions.
Kelly Iko from Yahoo Sports conveyed that Morant and his representatives expressed disinterest in the Kings, favoring the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves as their prime choices for relocation. Iko further noted that irrespective of Morant’s preferences, the organization intends to prioritize its own best interests.
Morant’s current agreement with the Grizzlies extends until the conclusion of the 2027–28 season; he is presently in the third year of a $197 million, five-year rookie extension designated for him. This upcoming summer, he will qualify to ink a new three-year deal valued at $178 million.
Following an impressive start to his professional journey, securing the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year title, Morant’s primary challenge has centered on consistent availability for games. For the current season, he has participated in merely 20 contests, sidelined by injuries to his calf and ankle, and serving a one-game ban.
Since his inaugural season, Morant has failed to participate in over 65 matchups in any subsequent year. In the 2023–24 campaign, Morant was featured in only nine games, having served a 25-game suspension at the season’s commencement, before ultimately sustaining a shoulder injury that concluded his participation.
For the ongoing year, Morant’s scoring average has fallen below 20 points per game, a first since his sophomore NBA season, concurrently posting a personal-low average of 3.3 rebounds per contest.
The announcement of the Grizzlies retaining Morant emerged merely two days after the squad executed a surprising eight-player exchange with the Utah Jazz, relinquishing Jaren Jackson Jr. The recipient of the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year award was dispatched to the Jazz, accompanied by John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr., and Jock Landale.
Conversely, the Grizzlies acquired Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, and Georges Niang, in addition to three forthcoming first-round selections in the draft.

Morant now continues as a core component in what has developed into an undeniable reconstruction phase for Memphis, set against a backdrop of numerous major alterations for the organization throughout the last twelve months.
During the previous season, the Grizzlies dismissed head coach Taylor Jenkins, elevating assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo a mere nine games prior to the postseason. Jenkins had served the organization for six seasons before their separation.
In the period between seasons, the squad transferred Desmond Bane to the Magic, obtaining Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected initial-round draft selections, and a prospective pick swap in return, following Bane’s signing of a maximum rookie extension with the team in 2023. Bane completed his initial five seasons playing for the Grizzlies.
