How Serena’s British hitting partner kept tennis’ biggest secret

Due to the recent damp conditions in London, grass court practice has been limited, leading Quayle to assist in finding indoor facilities at locations such as the Hurlingham Club and the National Tennis Centre.

“The training sessions we’ve conducted have been quite extraordinary,” Quayle remarked further.

“Her skill hasn’t diminished; she continues to perform at an exceptionally high standard. She embodies the pinnacle of professionalism.

“In my opinion, she stands as the most outstanding player ever, a fact evident in her on-court actions.

“It’s astonishing merely to participate in and observe this – let alone to gain knowledge from her and perceive her as both an ally and an adversary.”

Even though he is an experienced hitting partner on the pro circuit – and already secured a position for Wimbledon – Quayle admitted feeling “somewhat anxious” during his initial practice sessions with the winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

“It’s quite surreal to face a serve in person that you’ve observed on television for countless years, only for it to suddenly be directed your way,” he clarified.

“One finds themselves torn between appreciating certain strokes and actively engaging with them. She possesses such an imposing presence, making it occasionally challenging to avoid feeling a touch apprehensive.”

“I am progressively becoming more accustomed to encountering her across the court, yet each day remains exceptional.”

Quayle, whose aspiration is to transition into coaching eventually, is encouraged to voice any observations he has regarding Williams’s training methodology.

He commended the atmosphere surrounding her, stating that the team members are “approachable and agreeable”.

“With many commitments off the court, we don’t spend extensive time beyond the gym or practice area, but when we are together, she is incredibly pleasant,” Quayle stated.

“She is remarkably hospitable. We constantly share jokes and possess a comparable comedic sensibility.

“Every individual within that group contributes to making the atmosphere very pleasant for all involved.”

Quayle has received a request to proceed to Berlin next week, where Williams is scheduled to compete in her second comeback tournament alongside a partner who is currently undisclosed.

He mentioned that he is currently unaware if his employer will participate in Wimbledon, commencing on Monday, June 29th, but he is at least glad he can now be less ambiguous with friends regarding his whereabouts.

“I sense a relief and an ability to unwind somewhat, now that the confidential information has been disclosed,” he further remarked.
