As Shubman Gill entered the field for the first Test against England at Headingley on Friday (June 20), he joined an elite club of India’s youngest Test captains, a list that features legendary names like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

Shubman Gill: Youthful leadership for a new generation

At 25 years and 285 days, Shubman Gill has become the fifth youngest Test captain in Indian cricket history, a testament to his rapid rise and the faith the selectors have placed in his abilities. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as India navigates a period of transition following the retirements of stalwarts Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Gill’s cricketing journey has been marked by early promise and consistent performance. From scoring 351 in a school match at age 15 to starring in India’s Under-19 World Cup campaign, his ascent has been closely watched. Since making his Test debut in 2020, Gill has impressed with his composure and technical prowess, most notably with his match-defining 91 at the Gabba during India’s historic win over Australia. Now, as captain, he faces the daunting challenge of leading a relatively inexperienced side in English conditions, aiming to end India’s long wait for a Test series victory in England since 2007.

Sachin Tendulkar: The prodigy who led at 23

Decades before Gill, another young batting sensation was handed the captaincy: Sachin Tendulkar. At just 23 years and 169 days, Tendulkar became India’s second youngest Test captain in October 1996, leading the team against Australia in Delhi. His appointment was seen as a natural progression for a player already hailed as a generational talent.

Tendulkar’s captaincy tenure, however, was fraught with challenges. He led India in 25 Test matches, managing just four wins, nine losses and 12 draws, resulting in a modest win percentage of 16%. The team struggled during his leadership, particularly in overseas conditions, and Tendulkar eventually stepped down, paving the way for Sourav Ganguly’s successful era. Despite the lack of team success, Tendulkar’s personal performances remained stellar, and his leadership inspired a generation of cricketers.
