Injury sidelines GB’s Kartal from BJK Cup qualifier

Sonay Kartal will not participate in Great Britain’s upcoming Billie Jean King Cup qualifier versus Australia in Melbourne, scheduled for next week, due to an injury.

With the British number two unavailable, the UK team now finds itself without its top four highest-ranked players, as Emma Raducaunu, Katie Boulter, and Francesca Jones were previously omitted from the initial roster to concentrate on their respective clay-court campaigns.

Consequently, Harriet Dart, ranked 181st globally, becomes the most highly-ranked singles competitor for the squad in the fixture set for April 10-11.

Kartal, aged 24, stated that she has not fully recuperated from the lower back problem that led to her retirement during a fourth-round encounter at Indian Wells last month against Elena Rybakina, the world number three.

“Following a series of scans, it has become evident that I require additional time for the injury to completely mend,” Kartal commented.
