Irfan Pathan: Rohit & Kohli’s 2027 ODI World Cup Chances

A new phase in Indian cricket is underway, marked by Shubman Gill’s appointment as the national ODI captain. Attention, however, remains on experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have been important figures in Indian cricket for the past decade. As they approach the latter stages of their international careers, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has shared his views on what they need to do to be considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Irfan Pathan on key challenges for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Pathan, in a discussion on his YouTube channel, mentioned that while Rohit and Kohli have the ability and desire to play until 2027, maintaining optimum ‘match fitness’ would be their main challenge. He emphasized that fitness includes both physical shape and staying prepared for matches through consistent play.

“Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) are aiming to participate in the 2027 World Cup, but maintaining game fitness will present a significant hurdle for them. Rohit has been working hard on his fitness, and he’s dedicated to it. However, there’s a distinction between general fitness and the fitness required for match situations. If they aren’t playing regularly, they’ll need to ensure they get some game time. They should participate in domestic cricket,” Pathan explained.

He also noted that long breaks, similar to the one both players took after IPL 2025, could negatively impact their form and sharpness. The recently announced Indian squads for the upcoming tour of Australia include both Kohli and Rohit, signaling their return to play after a long absence. Pathan thinks that this kind of involvement is crucial if they want to prolong their careers.

Pathan provides the pathway for Rohit and Kohli to feature in 2027 World Cup

Because Rohit and Kohli are no longer part of India’s T20I team, their international schedules have become less busy. Pathan emphasized that domestic cricket could be important in helping them stay in good form and rhythm.

“They are experienced players who know what they need to do. They have a lot of experience. But because they aren’t playing T20Is, there will be long periods between the few matches they play before the World Cup. They will need consistent game time to be ready. Only then will they be able to fulfill their ambition of playing in the 2027 World Cup,” he added.

Pathan’s words come as there is more conversation about India’s plans for the next ODI period.
