Islam Makhachev anticipates an eventual showdown with Ilia Topuria.
Topuria recently conveyed to eldoberdanMMA his perception of Makhachev and his entourage as exhibiting “overconfidence and haughtiness.” He articulated his wish to achieve a submission victory over Makhachev while Khabib Nurmagomedov was present. Topuria escalated his remarks, challenging Nurmagomedov to come out of retirement, and asserted he would figuratively ‘stomp’ on “The Eagle.”
Makhachev informed Ushatayka of his conviction that he will ultimately have an opportunity to resolve their differences with the current UFC Lightweight Champion (as reported by MMAFighting).
“I’m unsure, but there’s a distinct feeling,” Makhachev remarked (translated from Russian by Championship Rounds) when queried about Topuria’s perceived disrespect. “He appears to harbor animosity towards us, yet I believe we will address this situation. Perhaps prior to a bout in some manner, or potentially at a later time. He is currently on a hiatus. Perhaps in due course, we will resolve this within the octagon and witness the outcome.”
Makhachev anticipates that Topuria will ultimately be held accountable for his statements.
“He seems dissatisfied with something,” Makhachev commented. “It’s imperative we ascertain the cause.”
Makhachev departed from the UFC lightweight category, a division he dominated with an unprecedented four consecutive title defenses. Subsequently, Makhachev was granted a welterweight championship bout against Jack Della Makhachev at Madison Square Garden in New York City last November. Makhachev maintained dominance throughout the contest, culminating in a unanimous decision win.
Upon Makhachev’s surrender of the UFC Lightweight Championship, a bout for the vacant title was arranged between Topuria and Charles Oliveira. Topuria secured a knockout victory in the opening round against “do Bronxs” to claim the UFC lightweight belt. “El Matador” had previously relinquished the UFC Featherweight Championship.
Topuria is presently taking a break due to ongoing personal issues. A provisional title contest featuring Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje is set to be the main event for UFC 324 on January 24th.
