Leinster have put an end to conjecture about Jacques Nienaber’s future by formally announcing that the senior coach has committed to a new contract that will last until the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.
Nienaber, who became part of the province last year after guiding South Africa to a second consecutive Rugby World Cup victory, is joined by fellow senior coaches Robin McBryde and Tyler Bleyendaal in affirming their commitment to the team’s future.
This announcement is made a week before Leinster begins its BKT United Rugby Championship journey, facing the DHL Stormers in Cape Town.
Head coach Leo Cullen stated that the extensions emphasize the stability within his coaching staff.
“I believe we all recognize the contributions made by Robin, Jacques, and Tyler, as well as the lasting impact they have had and continue to have on Leinster during their time here.
“They have each brought a wealth of relevant experience and a unique viewpoint on our methods, which I believe is vital for the growth of our team. It’s important for us to consider different perspectives and ways of working.
“Their influence extends beyond the senior team; they also engage with our academy players, visiting clubs and schools to share their knowledge and time generously. I am very pleased to have them all on board again.”
Leinster also verified the creation of a new position for a provincial kicking coach to enhance collaboration between the club, schools, and player development pathway. Emmet Farrell, a former Leinster outhalf and long-serving lead performance analyst, has been appointed. He will continue in his current role as the senior team’s kicking coach.
With Farrell’s promotion, Brian Colclough will be stepping up to become the lead performance analyst. Colclough has been with the province since 2016/17 and recently supported Samoa at the Rugby World Cup, in addition to assisting Ireland during this summer’s Tests against Georgia and Portugal.
Cullen mentioned that Farrell’s appointment and Colclough’s advancement are integral to ensuring continuity.
“I am also delighted for Emmet, who has been a vital part of this club’s success, both on and off the field, for over 20 years. He now has the opportunity to continue to develop as a coach, which will benefit not only us here in UCD but also others.
“That consistency and alignment is essential for us between what we are doing here in UCD and the brilliant work underway in our pathways and at the Ken Wall Centre of Excellence in Energia Park.
“This new role for Emmet presents an opportunity for Brian to advance, as well as for Juliette Fortune to take on a more senior role in the analysis team, and I am very pleased for both of them. They both started with us as interns, and it’s fantastic to see them continue their professional development with us at Leinster.”
