James Harden, a guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was taken into custody in Houston on Saturday due to an illegal weapon possession charge, according to records from the Harris County District Clerk’s Office.
Formally, the Harris County District Clerk’s Office states that Harden faces a charge labeled “UNL CARRYING WEAPON – GUN IN MV,” which indicates unauthorized possession of a firearm within a vehicle.
The Cleveland player was detained on a $100 bail, which was paid on Saturday, leading to his release from law enforcement custody. This charge is classified as a misdemeanor and, according to the case overview, pertains to a handgun not being secured correctly in its holster.
The apprehension of Harden occurred at 3:41 a.m. local time on Saturday. Information on the clerk’s official website indicates that the subsequent court proceeding is scheduled for June 22, at which point further actions concerning this matter will be deliberated.
The Cavaliers issued an official statement on Saturday afternoon.
“The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information.
We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.”
This player became a Cavalier before the NBA’s 2026 trade deadline. Cleveland obtained his services from the Los Angeles Clippers in a transaction that sent Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick in return.
Harden’s tenure in the NBA commenced in 2009. The Oklahoma City Thunder selected him as the third overall pick in that year’s draft. Throughout his fifteen-year professional journey, the veteran guard has played for several teams across the league, including stints with Houston, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia, prior to his time with the Clippers and subsequently the Cavaliers.
During the 26 regular-season contests he played for Cleveland last year, Harden achieved averages of 20.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game.
The seasoned guard possesses a player option for the upcoming 2026-2027 season; however, there is an anticipation that he will discuss a contract extension with the Cavaliers during the current offseason.
