Jauan Jennings, 49ers Rework 2025 Deal Before Free Agency.

Just a few days before the San Francisco 49ers commence their 2025 campaign, receiver Jauan Jennings has consented to a revised agreement, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Jennings, who was absent for a substantial period of training camp due to a lower leg ailment, had been pursuing a fresh arrangement with the squad and had even sought a change of scenery earlier in the offseason.

While Jennings’ updated agreement doesn’t include any additional secured funds, it does afford him the prospect to accumulate an extra $3 million in his coffers — atop his $7.5 million compensation — through performance-based bonuses. Amidst conversations with the franchise, Jennings declined a multi-year contract proposition, as indicated by Schefter, with aspirations of securing a more lucrative deal in the open market next offseason.

Selected in the seventh round out of Tennessee in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jennings has steadily developed a more prominent role within coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme. The previous season marked a significant progression for Jennings as he amassed 77 catches for 975 yards and six scores. Prior to that, Jennings had never surpassed 35 receptions or 416 yards.

49ers GM John Lynch addresses Jauan Jennings' desire for a trade amid WR's leg injury and ongoing contract talks

Following his impressive prior season, Jennings desired increased compensation and contract assurance beyond the 2025 season, however a persistent leg issue complicated matters. Prior to his return to practice on Monday, Jennings had been sidelined since July 27. Speculation arose regarding whether Jennings’ contract circumstances were the primary cause for his absence, rather than the leg injury, yet 49ers general manager John Lynch emphasized the unpredictable nature of leg injuries the previous week.

“Both aspects can be accurate,” Lynch expressed on August 27th. “He is seeking a new agreement and is also dealing with a leg ailment. It’s common for individuals to assume one or the other, but in reality, both can hold validity.”

Lynch also verified that Jennings had indeed voiced a wish to be traded, but denied it.

“We will not be pursuing that avenue,” he confirmed.

Regarding the contract situation, Jennings possessed some level of leverage during the summer period, owing to the relatively shallow composition of the San Francisco receiver group. With Brandon Aiyuk still mending from an ACL tear sustained the previous October, Jennings, alongside second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall, constitute the primary options for quarterback Brock Purdy.

In recent times, the 49ers secured the services of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, subsequent to his release from the Seattle Seahawks, and obtained Skyy Moore through a transaction with the Kansas City Chiefs to fortify the receiving corps. Additionally, Demarcus Robinson, a free-agent acquisition, will be unavailable for the initial four contests of the season due to suspension.

Jennings engaged in a limited capacity during Wednesday’s practice session, but coach Kyle Shanahan conveyed to reporters that he anticipates Jennings’ participation in Sunday’s opening game against the Seahawks.
