Jets Extend Garrett Wilson with $130M Deal

Garrett Wilson, a wide receiver, has secured a long-term commitment with the New York Jets.

According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets finalized a four-year contract extension with Wilson on Monday, amounting to $130 million. Wilson is now the initial player from the Jets’ 2022 draft selections to be granted a contract extension.

Wilson’s annual compensation will be $32.5 million, with $90 million guaranteed under the terms of the agreement. He now holds the distinction of being the first wide receiver in the league’s history to command an average of over $31 million per season following his initial three seasons. This recent contract places Wilson among the highest-paid wide receivers in the entire league, with only four players, including Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals at $40 million annually, exceeding his earnings.

Wilson, selected by the Jets as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 draft from Ohio State, has consistently achieved at least 1,000 receiving yards per season throughout his NFL tenure. Last season, he amassed 1,104 receiving yards and seven touchdowns from 101 receptions, marking career-best figures in each category.

Notwithstanding Wilson’s impressive introduction to the league, the Jets have encountered difficulties since his arrival. They concluded the previous season with a 5-12 record and prolonged their playoff absence to a 14th consecutive year while dismissing head coach Robert Saleh. Subsequently, the team appointed Aaron Glenn as Saleh’s replacement and mutually agreed to part ways with seasoned quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson, remarkably having played alongside seven different quarterbacks during his career without missing a single game, is set to collaborate with new quarterback Justin Fields this upcoming season. Fields entered into a two-year, $40 million arrangement with the Jets during the offseason.

Although securing Wilson for the subsequent six seasons represents a straightforward decision that should invariably propel the franchise forward, revitalizing the Jets’ playoff aspirations will require more than just a new quarterback. Presently, the team intends to negotiate agreements with other members of his draft class, potentially commencing with star cornerback Sauce Gardner.
