This anecdote hasn’t been openly shared by me, though Joel has alluded to it on occasion.
It’s widely recognized that he was, to some extent, struggling physically during the Olympic games, yet he saw it as an opportunity to secure a victory.
Subsequently, he needed to intensify his efforts during the pre-season period.
His attempts to recover his fitness involved participating in basketball matches, specifically NBA games, for the purpose of regaining peak physical condition, given his inability to engage in regular training.
He was unable to partake in drills.
Observers sometimes perceive him and comment, “He lacks conditioning, he’s indolent.”
My perspective is that one doesn’t progress from initially engaging with basketball at age 16 to becoming arguably the most proficient center ever without considerable diligence.
He stands among the most diligent individuals I have collaborated with throughout my career.
Historically, even when performing at half his capacity, he would continue to play.
He embodied the spirit of a fighter; he was a true contender.
His stance was, “Should my body permit me to participate, I will do so.”
Consequently, he entered the playoff series with various ailments.
For the current season, his strategy has shifted towards, “Unless I am in optimal health, I will not be on the court.”
Therefore, he will refrain from subjecting his physique to the same strenuous demands as he has previously.
The public remains unaware of the intense discomfort he has endured during games, solely to provide his squad with an opportunity for victory.
