Iconic UFC fighter Jon Jones designated Ilia Topuria as the foremost challenge to his status as the premier competitor in mixed martial arts history.
Numerous enthusiasts, analysts, and peers regard MMA titan Jon Jones as the finest combatant ever to step inside the Octagon. Jones stepped away from mixed martial arts following a knockout victory against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, which marked a successful defense of his heavyweight belt.
A number of athletes throughout UFC history present compelling arguments for being the all-time best, with Jones right at the forefront. UFC Hall of Fame members Georges St-Pierre along with Khabib Nurmagomedov also frequently surface as top contenders in conversations surrounding the GOAT title.
Prior to Ilia Topuria dropping the UFC lightweight crown in a stunning loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, Jones identified Topuria as the ultimate danger to his legacy as the greatest of all time.
Jon Jones perceived Ilia Topuria as ‘unbeatable’ prior to defeat at UFC White House event
During a recent sit-down on Prince Street Pizza, Jones highlighted Topuria as the primary danger to his GOAT credentials.
“Prior to that White House show, I perceived him as [unbeatable]. As much as I desire to see upcoming fighters surpass my achievements and earn the mantle of the next best, a part of me wishes to maintain that prestige for my children and my family’s legacy,” Jones remarked regarding Topuria.
“Truthfully, I believed Ilia was positioned to be the primary contender for the title of best ever, but then we witnessed how things unfolded for him.” (via MMA Fighting)
Even though Topuria missed out on solidifying GOAT status in Jones’ view, he anticipates that the ex-two-weight champion will recover strongly upon his octagon comeback.
“Yet in terms of showmanship, his striking abilities, raw strength, self-assurance, and overall persona,” Jones noted when discussing Topuria.
“I admire his demeanor beyond the cage. He hails from an accomplished household, and he isn’t forced to compete for financial gain; he fights purely out of passion, which is precisely why I became such a huge supporter of Ilia.”
