The Indianapolis Colts made significant moves on Tuesday, trading DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson. With the organization seemingly signaling a retreat concerning the 2026 season, both fans and analysts are speculating on which players might be next to go.
One of the most sought-after players in this scenario would undoubtedly be running back Jonathan Taylor, who is having an outstanding season after a 1,500-yard performance last year.
As of Wednesday, however, Taylor has not put forth a trade request to the team, as per head coach Shane Steichen.
If Taylor were to hit the trade market, he would likely attract considerable interest. While he’s faced injuries throughout his career, he has proven to be one of the top running backs when healthy. The 27-year-old has surpassed 1,100 rushing yards in four out of his six NFL seasons and is currently projected to exceed that threshold once more in 2026.
This level of performance, combined with Taylor’s existing contract, should enable the Colts to receive a substantial return. Taylor has two years remaining on his deal, totaling $44 million.
Given this context, the Colts may find it advantageous to trade the star running back, even if he is not actively seeking a departure.
Josh Downs reportedly requests trade from Colts
While Downs was questioned about the circulating rumors, he neither confirmed nor denied them.
At 25 years old, Downs has demonstrated flashes of talent since being drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, though he has yet to achieve a 1,000-yard season. He came closest in 2024 with 803 yards and five touchdowns in just 14 games during his sophomore year. However, his stats dipped in 2025, even while participating in more games.
Expectations were high for the wide receiver this year, particularly with Alec Pierce recovering from an offseason ankle injury. Downs is currently on track to surpass last year’s receiving figures, but his production thus far has been modest. Over seven games, he has accumulated 307 yards with no touchdowns.
Due to this, Downs may not bring a substantial return if traded. Although his statistics with the Colts have not been impressive, he could see an increase in production if he joins a team with a more dynamic, pass-oriented offense.
The Colts have until November 10 to make decisions regarding both players. However, following their recent trades, the team has displayed a readiness to act swiftly when the right offer arises.
