According to Agit Kabayel, a hypothetical bout between Anthony Joshua and Arslanbek Makhmudov in 2026 would be a “very close fight.” He mentioned that Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) is coming off a defeat to Daniel Dubois in their match which occurred on September 21, 2024.

Returning to the ring after a potential year-and-a-half absence to face Makhmudov would pose a significant challenge for Joshua. Makhmudov’s (21-2, 19 KOs) punching strength and resilience would create considerable obstacles for Joshua.
AJ’s Absence and Vulnerable Defense
Doubts linger regarding Joshua’s ability to withstand a powerful blow without being knocked down. Should Makhmudov land a significant strike, he would have a strong chance of securing a knockout victory. The formidable 6’5 1/2″ Russian typically capitalizes effectively when his opponents are weakened.
“This fight is beneficial for both AJ and Makhmudov,” stated heavyweight contender Agit Kabayel to Boxing King Media regarding a possible showdown between Anthony Joshua and Arslanbek Makhmudov. “AJ enters the fight following a loss to Daniel Dubois.”
Makhmudov has indicated that Joshua assured him of a future fight. He is hopeful that Joshua will keep his word, as he is eager for this opportunity. Given that Makhmudov is 36, this could be his final opportunity for a substantial payout before retirement if Joshua agrees to the fight.
The Evenly Matched Scenario
“For him, it’s also an advantageous fight if he faces Makhmudov. I anticipate this will be a very close fight. It won’t be a straightforward victory for AJ. This is not a simple contest for him. We will have to see what happens in the ring. I believe it’s a very appealing matchup for boxing enthusiasts,” Kabayel commented.
Will Joshua Disregard Hearn?
Joshua might need to counter the plans of his promoters, Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith, as they have suggested a different course for him in 2026, possibly against Tyson Fury or another opponent.
Engaging with Makhmudov at this time would be a risky proposition for Joshua because if he fails to achieve an early knockout, the likelihood of him being caught with a damaging blow is increased. Arslanbek’s ability to withstand punches means he won’t be easily defeated in the initial rounds. He will remain competitive and have ample opportunities to land his powerful punches.
