Sonay Kartal of Great Britain fell short of claiming the grandest victory of her professional life, losing energy during an intense Wuhan Open championship match against Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska.
The 24-year-old Kartal was aiming for the crown in merely her third tournament following a half-year layoff due to a back issue.
Yet the demands of a remarkable week took their toll on Kartal, who exhausted her mental and physical reserves during a 2-6 6-4 6-2 loss.
Participating in only the tenth contest of her remarkable return, Kartal was striving to be the first British player to capture a WTA 1,000 trophy since Johanna Konta’s triumph in 2017.
Entering the competition placed 170th globally, Kartal advanced to the Sunday decider by overcoming a lineup of prominent competitors, including active top-10 stars and past Grand Slam winners.
Nonetheless, Polish player Chwalinska—a surprising finalist at this year’s French Open—drew Kartal into a grueling contest and eventually prevailed.
Kartal controlled the opening set comfortably and held a break advantage in the second prior to Chwalinska shifting the tide in her direction.
The 25-year-old Chwalinska experienced some tension while nearing her maiden WTA 1,000 victory, yet converted her third match point after Kartal struck a forehand beyond the baseline.
Even with the defeat in the final, Kartal experienced a life-changing week that exceeded even her own expectations.
Come Monday, Kartal will ascend to 50th position in the world rankings—nearing her personal best—and assume the title of British number one for the very first time.
