The Arizona Diamondbacks commenced the latter portion of the schedule without one of their key players. Second baseman Ketel Marte, who held the third spot for the National League in the All-Star Game and delivered a two-run double in the opening frame against standout pitcher Tarik Skubal, was added to the inactive list Friday.

Information circulating earlier in the week suggested that Marte’s residence had experienced a break-in, and this situation is linked to his absence. According to MLB.com:

Marte’s dwelling in the Phoenix vicinity was subjected to a burglary during his absence for the All-Star Game, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo hinted that this was the rationale behind Marte’s request for a “few days” of leave.

“He sought some time off, time away, to regain composure and prepare himself to return and perform effectively,” Lovullo stated. “So it’s essentially a day-to-day matter. I’ve had limited communication with him.”

“We are all aware of the situation he is dealing with,” Lovullo commented, alluding to the burglary. “It’s been unfortunate. I believe he withdraws somewhat when distressed, and I respect that space, and I’m willing to grant him that space.”

Marte, aged 31, currently boasts a batting line of .290/.394/.567 (165 OPS+) with 13 doubles, 19 home runs, 40 RBIs, 52 runs scored, and a 3.1 WAR across 68 games for Arizona this season. He is now a three-time All-Star, having secured third place in the NL MVP voting the previous season.
