Lakers Eye Luka: Buss & Pelinka Watch Dončić in Poland

The upper management of the Los Angeles Lakers wholeheartedly backs their star player, Luka Dončić, and his choice to represent Slovenia, his home nation, in the upcoming 2025 EuroBasket competition. Jeanie Buss, the team’s governor, and Rob Pelinka, the president of basketball operations, were both present in Poland to observe the final practice session of Dončić and the Slovenian national team prior to the tournament.

“It’s a straightforward decision,” Dončić stated. “I consistently desire to represent my nation. I always have. Regardless of the circumstances. Of course, I won’t participate if I’m injured, but if I’m healthy, I will consistently play.”

Pelinka communicated that the organization wants Dončić to understand that they are supportive of him and that everyone is in agreement with his decision to represent his nation. Kurt and Linda Rambis, along with Dr. Leroy Sims, the director of player performance and health, were also present alongside Pelinka and Buss. Dončić experienced a minor knee issue during Slovenia’s pre-tournament training, from which he has since received clearance to return. However, the Lakers are not apprehensive.

“Our aim was to convey to Luka our support for his commitment to his country. This is of significant importance to the Lakers when we have a player who represents the face of our franchise, and we wanted to demonstrate our support,” Pelinka stated.

“And it’s wonderful to observe him interacting with his teammates and enjoying himself. As you mentioned, he is in exceptional condition and highly dedicated to his offseason training. Witnessing this firsthand made the trip across the ocean worthwhile.”

On August 3, Dončić finalized a three-year contract extension with the Lakers, valued at $165 million, following a significant trade to the franchise the previous season. The Lakers traded Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round draft pick in exchange for Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris in a three-team transaction that also involved the Utah Jazz.

The five-time All-NBA selection recorded averages of 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game during his time with both the Mavericks and the Lakers in the past season.

Following the trade, the Mavericks secured the first overall selection in the 2025 NBA Draft through the lottery, choosing Cooper Flagg, a highly regarded prospect from Duke University.

While the Lakers are prioritizing winning a championship with Dončić and LeBron James, they are fully in support of Dončić’s participation in the 2025 EuroBasket tournament. Provided he remains healthy, Dončić will represent his country, and the Lakers will continue to endorse this endeavor, particularly after his offseason efforts focused on enhancing his physical condition for the approaching 2025-26 NBA season.
