The anticipation has finally concluded as LeBron James is reportedly set to join the Philadelphia 76ers to embark on his 24th year in the NBA. On Friday morning, James shared a social media post on X, admitting he previously believed his basketball career had concluded at the end of last season and that he required some time away to determine if his passion for the sport remained.
It seems James discovered the clarity he was seeking, and his decision to sign with the 76ers caught both sports bettors and oddsmakers completely off guard.
More than $226 million was wagered on the prediction platform Kalshi regarding his next destination, with the Miami Heat leading the pack as the frontrunners at almost 45% on Friday morning. Since the betting market was launched in late January, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors had also taken turns as the top choices to secure LeBron’s talents.
Late in the night on July 3, Philadelphia momentarily held the second-highest probability at 18% compared to Cleveland’s 43%, representing their peak standing in the market. There was little to suggest in the betting trends that James would select Philadelphia, given that by Friday morning at 11:29 a.m. ET, the 76ers sat in fourth place behind Miami, Cleveland, and Golden State, with odds of just 8.9%.
Following the declaration, Philadelphia’s championship odds surged from 20-1 to 10-1, positioning the franchise with the fourth-strongest odds to secure the league title next season.
“The betting action has been entirely focused on the 76ers,” remarked Halvor Egeland, who serves as the trading strategy manager at BetMGM, when speaking to Yahoo Sports about the flurry of activity following the announcement. “Within the initial hour, 98% of all championship-related wagers were placed on Philadelphia.”
The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder (+275) remain the co-favorites to win, with the New York Knicks trailing them at +850.
“This places them right up there in a tight battle with the Knicks at the top of the Eastern Conference,” a seasoned oddsmaker shared in a text to Yahoo Sports on Friday. “However, the Sixers’ ultimate success rests entirely on whether Joel Embiid can remain healthy.”
In line with that, Philadelphia currently holds the second-lowest odds to claim the Eastern Conference crown (+400), trailing only the Knicks (+350) while staying ahead of the Boston Celtics (+500). According to BetMGM, the 76ers have attracted the highest volume of conference championship bets at 23%.
“While there will likely be some local hype, we adjusted their championship odds from 17-1 to 10-1,” Thomas Gable, the sportsbook director at Atlantic City’s The Borgata, stated in a text message. “I believed Philadelphia had a chance, but I didn’t view them as frontrunners because of questions surrounding how he would fit alongside Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and particularly Joel Embiid. It will be fascinating to monitor how many matchups he and Embiid actually play alongside each other.”
That remains a challenge for the franchise to address down the road. For now, Philadelphia can simply enjoy their victory in the race for LeBron James.
