During Friday’s World Cup downhill competition in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, Lindsey Vonn seemed to sustain an injury after a tumble. The renowned American skier was observed to be favoring her left knee, a concerning indicator just seven days prior to the commencement of the Milan Cortina Olympics.
At an initial stage of her descent, Vonn lost her equilibrium subsequent to a jump, sliding backward into protective netting. Following several minutes of attention from medical staff, she managed to rise, leveraging her ski poles for stability while clutching her left knee.
Reports indicate Vonn progressed slowly towards the finish area, pausing multiple times, prior to hobbling into an onsite medical facility. Subsequently, she was evacuated by helicopter.
Via an Instagram update, Vonn stated that she is “consulting with my medical professionals and support group and will proceed with additional evaluations.”
“This is an extremely challenging development with the Olympics merely seven days away… however, if there’s an ability I possess, it is to stage a return.”
The 41-year-old Vonn represented the third competitor to fall during the Crans-Montana World Cup event. The competition was called off after Vonn’s run because of inadequate visibility.
Peter Gerdol, the Women’s World Cup Race Director, commented, “The primary justification is the well-being of the participants. The visual conditions deteriorated progressively, preventing them from clearly discerning the racing path and leading to errors. We observed six athletes begin, and all six made various missteps. This indicated a precarious scenario. While acknowledging our discipline carries inherent dangers, the perceived hazard level was excessive. Consequently, the Jury resolved to halt the contest.”
Vonn ceased competing professionally in 2019, yet she experienced a resurgence of her competitive drive after observing the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She had knee replacement surgery in 2024 and in December, she secured her initial World Cup victory in almost six years, affirming her return. She achieved another win earlier in the current month.
Vonn secured a gold medal in the downhill event and a bronze in the super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, and she also earned an additional bronze medal in the downhill at the 2018 Games held in Pyeongchang.
The women’s Olympic downhill competition is scheduled for February 8th at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, located in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
