LIV Golf Announces Its Shutdown – Yahoo Sports

LIV Golf, the league that challenged the traditional landscape of professional golf, is officially coming to an end.

This conclusion was confirmed during a bankruptcy hearing in New Jersey on Thursday, where attorneys representing the league stated that it would not pursue restructuring options after its main financial backer, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, withdrew support, leading to a planned complete liquidation.

LIV had been in discussions with BC Partners regarding a possible $300 million investment for what was referred to as “LIV 2.0.” However, those discussions were reportedly halted, as detailed by the Financial Times and the Athletic. The reports indicated that LIV had garnered interest from over 30 players for the 2027 season, although it appeared to lack marquee talent.

In a statement, BC Partners expressed:

“BC Partners Credit facilitated a transaction that matched the interests of players and investors, paving a credible route toward establishing a sustainable future for LIV Golf. While support for the league was significant, we regret that an agreement that satisfied all parties could not be achieved. We recognize the relentless efforts of LIV Golf’s management and extend our gratitude to the players who engaged positively and upheld the future of LIV. We wish them great success in their ongoing careers.”

Looking ahead, the most pressing question may revolve around the career prospects for those who recently departed from LIV and those considering staying, such as Bryson DeChambeau. Established in the summer of 2022, LIV attracted numerous top players and initiated various changes in professional golf, including within the PGA Tour. However, LIV concluded its last event in August.

As part of a statement issued by LIV on Thursday, Scott O’Neil, the CEO, stated:

“Creating a worldwide platform aimed at attracting new, younger, and more diverse fans to the sport of golf has been an unforgettable journey for all involved. LIV Golf was entertaining, demanding, inspiring, at times challenging — but always fulfilling. Collectively, our team organized top-tier individual and team competitions across five continents, established a global enterprise, secured pathways to prestigious tournaments like the Open and U.S. Open, earned Official World Golf Ranking points, collaborated with stakeholders focused on the game’s health and future, created value in our teams, attracted leading sponsors, invited investors to support an innovative business plan, and built a league capable of enticing both elite and emerging talents globally.

“The essence of these accomplishments lay with our players, a diverse roster from over 20 nations, whose enthusiasm, dedication, and faith in the vision were integral to what we built. Equally crucial were our global partners — from governments and local communities to iconic golf courses and prominent corporate brands — whose collective aspirations turned that vision into reality. There were vibrant concert experiences, award-winning fan interactions, engaging entertainment for families, locally inspired music along with food and beverage offerings reflecting the culture of each host location, innovative technologies, state-of-the-art broadcast setups, and most importantly, world-class golf. We created moments that I hope will motivate a new generation of fans to engage with, participate in, and grow fond of this wonderful game.”
