Following recent inquiries into LIV Golf’s fiscal health and prospects, its scheduled June tournament in New Orleans is reportedly being rescheduled.
The LIV Golf Louisiana tournament, originally slated for June 25, is being pushed back, as confirmed by WDSU of Louisiana and Brody Miller of The Athletic. A formal statement is anticipated on Tuesday.
An individual familiar with LIV Golf’s operations informed Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports on Monday evening that the organization is collaborating with Louisiana authorities to secure an autumn date for the competition, aiming to circumvent World Cup audience conflicts, mitigate high temperatures, and guarantee optimal course readiness.
This reported delay emerges merely weeks after news broke concerning LIV Golf’s fiscal viability. Several news sources indicated earlier this month that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the principal financier of LIV Golf, was reportedly planning to retract its backing from the circuit. Even with the acquisition of prominent figures in golf—such as Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson—LIV Golf has encountered difficulty establishing itself since its 2022 inception, resulting in substantial financial losses.
In response to these claims, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil refuted them in an internal email dated April 15, assuring his employees that the league possessed complete financial support and would proceed “precisely as intended, without interruption and at maximum pace.” Furthermore, LIV Golf successfully staged its Mexico City tournament earlier in the month, adhering to its schedule.
Following the publications that scrutinized LIV’s financial prospects, Susan Bourgeois, Louisiana’s secretary of economic development, publicly contacted O’Neil to discuss the New Orleans competition. Their conversation took place on Friday, as reported by The Athletic, culminating in a mutual decision to delay the event “owing to shifts in LIV Golf’s operational strategy.”
Louisiana state authorities had earmarked approximately $7 million for hosting the LIV Golf tournament in New Orleans. Reports indicate roughly $2 million was allocated for enhancements at Bayou Oaks at City Park, with an additional $5 million committed for hosting charges. However, expenditures had only surpassed $3 million slightly. LIV Golf is expected to reimburse Louisiana $1.2 million.
The New Orleans competition represented one of the five LIV Golf tournaments planned for the current season within the United States. LIV Golf is next slated to host an event on May 7 at President Donald Trump’s golf course in Virginia. The season for LIV Golf is scheduled to conclude with its team championship tournament in Michigan, running from August 27-30.
