The possibility of Liverpool acquiring Alexander Isak from Newcastle United has reportedly gained momentum.
The Swedish international was noticeably absent during Monday night’s match, where Liverpool secured a 3-2 victory against Newcastle at St. James’ Park. The Magpies displayed resilience but ultimately succumbed to a late goal from Rio Ngumoha.
Following comments from Sky Sports analyst and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football, suggesting that Isak’s situation at Newcastle is unsustainable and a departure is likely, renewed efforts for a transfer are underway.
Liverpool poised to finalize Alexander Isak acquisition from Newcastle United in a significant €90m transaction
Liverpool’s initial bid for Isak – who is currently ranked fourth in FourFourTwo’s evaluation of the world’s top strikers – was approximately £120 million, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, as reported on X (formerly Twitter).
Despite the initial rejection, it was anticipated that the Merseyside club would make a subsequent offer, given Newcastle’s challenges in securing a replacement for their central striker.
According to a report by Newcastle correspondent Craig Hope in the Mail, the club has reached an agreement with Stuttgart for the acquisition of promising German forward Nick Woltemade.
German journalist Florian Plettenberg has also indicated via X (formerly Twitter) that the deal is “done”. However, FourFourTwo remains cautious in confirming the transfer definitively, considering Newcastle’s eventful summer in the transfer market.
The 23-year-old represented Germany in the 2025 European Under-21 Championship and made a significant impact, scoring a hat-trick in their 3–0 victory against Slovenia.
Hope reports that Woltemade is scheduled to undergo a medical examination in the north-east of England as part of a £65m deal. The club is also reportedly interested in Premier League forwards Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen.
The potential acquisitions of Wissa or Strand Larsen are also possibilities, as Newcastle seeks a replacement for Callum Wilson in their squad.
Transfermarkt estimates Woltemade’s value at €30m.
Woltemade possesses exceptional physical attributes. Standing at 6ft 6in, he excels in aerial duels and demonstrates impressive skill in ground-level challenges. He can serve as a target for long passes and clearances or partner with a more conventional forward in a surprisingly effective big man-little man combination.
While somewhat ungainly and less polished than Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike, his presence in the penalty area is outstanding, as evidenced during the recent U21 Euros. He thrives on the type of midfield support characterized by runners, which Newcastle has in abundance.
