Liverpool’s offensive abilities were already regarded as among the finest in Europe, but with the expected addition of Alexander Isak to Anfield, Michael Owen suggests the Reds could soon boast the most impressive attacking lineup in global soccer.
The Swedish forward is expected to be part of a transformed attacking group that also includes fellow recent acquisitions Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, alongside established stars like Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. Liverpool have reportedly invested around £300 million on new offensive players, even after comfortably winning the title last season, leading some to question how all these players will be accommodated.
Owen, a former Ballon d’Or recipient, understands the pressures of leading Liverpool’s attack and sees significant potential in Arne Slot’s fresh attacking choices.
Michael Owen: ‘Liverpool could have the most formidable attack in the world with Alexander Isak joining’
“It has the potential to be the most impressive attack in the world,” Owen tells FourFourTwo courtesy of Casimba Gaming,
“And things have changed from the days when certain players were assigned to specific positions permanently. With so many games and so much rotation, everyone’s contribution is important.”
However, not everyone can be in the starting eleven, and Owen is aware of the selection problem that awaits Slot.
“They won’t all be able to play every game,” he says. “However, there will be numerous fixtures, possible injuries, and fluctuations in form. It will be intriguing to see who Slot chooses for the starting lineup when everyone is fit and there’s a significant match. But it’s a good problem that any manager would want.”
While Reds supporters are excited at the prospect of their new attack, Owen admits his surprise at the scale of transfers his former team has made this summer. Along with the revamped attack, defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have also reportedly joined.
“I must say I am quite surprised by the amount of signings,” Owen states. “Some were necessary, and some were unavoidable. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure meant that finding a new right back became essential.
“There was also a feeling that a better option was needed at left back and, with Caoimhin Kelleher signaling his desire for a new experience, a new goalkeeper too. But I was taken aback by Luis Diaz being allowed to leave. There’s been a larger amount of turnover than I anticipated. It is quite unusual for a team to dominate the league and then implement so many large-scale changes.”
Liverpool have commenced the season flawlessly, securing three victories in their first three games, including a win against Arsenal last Sunday. They are considered frontrunners to retain their Premier League title.
