LSU Basketball Legend Dale Brown Dies at 90

Louisiana State University Coach Dale Brown

Today, LSU men’s basketball coach Dale Brown has sadly passed away at the age of 90, as per an announcement made by his family, which was subsequently verified by LSU.

With 488 wins and 13 NCAA Tournament appearances during his 25 years with the Tigers, Brown holds the record as the most successful coach in LSU’s history. He won the SEC title on four occasions and reached the Final Four twice.

Brown received the SEC Coach of the Year award four times and was honored as National Coach of the Year in 1981, during one of his two Final Four appearances.

His legacy was solidified when the court in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center was named in his honor in 2023.

“We have lost the most loving and most beloved person we have ever known,” a statement from the family, shared by LSU, expressed today. “Dale Brown consistently prioritized others. He led with compassion and was always an exemplary humanitarian above all else. Dale fell deeply in love with Louisiana long ago, and the people of Louisiana reciprocated that love. We are eternally grateful for this.”

Among Brown’s significant achievements at LSU is the recruitment of Shaquille O’Neal, who became the #1 pick in the 1992 NBA Draft and is considered one of the greatest forwards in basketball history.

Details regarding funeral services will be announced at a future date.
