Maharashtra Skipper on Shaw-Khan Altercation.

A friendly practice game involving Maharashtra versus Mumbai at the MCA Ground in Gahunje, Pune, took an unexpected turn on Tuesday as an argument broke out between Prithvi Shaw and the young Mumbai bowler Musheer Khan. This occurred shortly after Shaw was out, although he had just played a brilliant innings of 181 runs from 220 balls in his first match for Maharashtra.

Shaw, playing against his former Mumbai colleagues, was in excellent form, hitting 21 boundaries and three sixes during a huge 305-run partnership with opening batsman Arshin Kulkarni, who also scored an impressive 186 from 140 deliveries. The confrontation started in the 74th over when Musheer managed to get Shaw out, with Irfan Umair taking the catch at square leg.

Maharashtra captain explains what happened in the argument between Prithvi Shaw and Musheer Khan

Several people who witnessed the event, along with video clips shared online, suggest that there was tension between Shaw and Musheer throughout the innings. Ankit Bawne, the captain of Maharashtra, mentioned after the day’s play that the Mumbai fielders had been making some comments, but it was a sarcastic comment after the dismissal that triggered the incident.

As Shaw was walking off the field after being dismissed, Musheer supposedly said “Thank you” in a mocking way. Although the words themselves may seem innocent, the way they were said implied frustration from the young bowler, who had been on the receiving end of Shaw’s impressive batting. Shaw stopped, turned around, and walked back towards Musheer in anger. Video clips appear to show Shaw lifting his bat before grabbing Musheer by his shirt collar, causing an umpire and nearby players to step in quickly.

Bawne clarified that the argument was a result of competitive emotions rather than personal dislike. “It’s just a practice game. They have played together in the past and these things can happen when emotions are high. Everything is okay now, there are no ongoing issues,” he stated.

No official action taken yet by cricket organisations

At present, neither the Mumbai Cricket Association nor the Maharashtra Cricket Association has released an official statement regarding the incident. Sources indicate that because this was a friendly warm-up match and not an official competitive game, it is unlikely that any disciplinary action will be taken unless further complaints are made.

Sources have also confirmed that Shaw’s strong reaction was partly because of the continuous comments made earlier in the day. His batting had significantly troubled the Mumbai bowlers, and the “thank you” comment touched a nerve at a bad time. Cricket experts have noted that such incidents are not unusual when experienced players compete against young, ambitious players trying to prove themselves.

While the argument only lasted briefly, it overshadowed what was otherwise a remarkable day of batting. Both Shaw and Musheer have connections to Mumbai cricket, and Tuesday’s event was a rare instance of former teammates clashing in a competitive setting.
