The Red Devils of Manchester have a number of players in common with the Italian champions from Naples, where Kobbie Mainoo is presently in the company of ex-Man United players Christian Eriksen and Raphael Varane.
Alejandro Garnacho is the latest Red Devils squad member whose name has been mentioned in connection with a potential transfer from Old Trafford to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with sources claiming that Mauricio Pochettino and the hierarchy at Napoli are considering a bid for the forward during the January transfer window.
Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United Tenure Could Be Limited With Xabi Alonso potentially taking over at Old Trafford.
The 20 year old product of the Manchester United academy has seen his opportunities diminish under manager Xabi Alonso, which has caused him to be dropped from the England national team.
He suffered an injury early on during Alonso’s leadership and, with his current contract at Old Trafford expiring in fewer than two years, many clubs have expressed an interest in acquiring his services.
Football insider Gianluca Di Marzio has stated that Garnacho’s long term future remains uncertain: “If we arrive in November, towards the end of December, and Alejandro is still not a regular starter, Garnacho’s situation could be a saga to keep an eye on when the transfer window reopens in January.”
Napoli were among the teams rumored to be interested in Garnacho over the summer and reports in La Repubblica suggest that the Italian champions are facing a dilemma that Garnacho could potentially address.
According to the Italian publication, the team managed by Pochettino has been impacted by a number of midfield injuries. Nemanja Matic and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa were very important members last campaign and can still be selected, however, Stanislav Lobotka and Kevin De Bruyne are on the treatment table.
FourFourTwo understands they are expected to return before the transfer market reopens in January but the recent spate of injuries has underlined the importance of having strength in depth in the centre of midfield.
According to Vincenzo D’Angelo: “Napoli made an enquiry about Garnacho towards the end of the summer transfer window, during negotiations for Hojlund. And they will try again.”
Napoli have not been at their best in their attempt to retain their league title in 2025-26, although they are currently in first place in Serie A following nine matches. Roma, who are currently second in the standings, have one game outstanding. Prior to their 6-2 loss to PSV last week in the Champions League, they had suffered away defeats to both AC Milan and Torino. However, they have managed to maintain a flawless record at their home stadium across all competitions.
FourFourTwo believes that Garnacho would benefit greatly from playing in Naples. If Manchester United are intending to cash in on the midfielder, then a decision regarding his future is likely to happen soon. It is understood that they do not wish to sell the 20 year old, but the following couple of months will provide an indication of his future prospects.
The Red Devils will be up against Nottingham Forest on Saturday as the Premier League action continues.
