ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Toronto Maple Leafs have formally terminated their professional relationship with Brad Treliving, removing him from his position as the general manager of the team.
“During the current season, extensive examination has been conducted concerning both the present condition of the Maple Leafs franchise and the strategic path required to accomplish the primary objective of bringing a Stanley Cup victory to this city,” MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley stated.
“We all hold profound admiration and regard for Brad Treliving, both in his capacity as a hockey administrator and as an individual; however, a decision was made that the team needs to pursue an alternative direction with new management. The organization expresses its gratitude for all of Brad’s contributions over his almost three-year tenure with the Maple Leafs, and we extend our best wishes to him and his loved ones.”
Treliving’s employment concludes near the conclusion of his third year serving as general manager. The team achieved a regular-season record of 139–92–27, alongside a postseason record of 10-10, notably securing a first-round series victory against the Ottawa Senators during the previous season. The Leafs faced elimination in the decisive Game 7 of the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs against the eventual titleholders, the Florida Panthers.
Treliving joined the organization in the summer of 2023, subsequent to Kyle Dubas’s contentious exit, with an unequivocal directive: to transform the Maple Leafs into a more formidable opponent. He promptly commenced his duties by signing Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and Ryan Reaves. This represented a fundamental change in approach, gravitating towards the “postseason-caliber” hockey that supporters desired. Currently, two of those individuals are no longer members of the team.
The legacy of Treliving’s time in Toronto might be characterized by the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. Toronto transferred promising young player Fraser Minten and a protected first-round draft choice to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Carlo, a move designed to fortify the premier defensive pairing. This pairing alongside Morgan Rielly did not deliver the desired defensive outcomes for the team. In contrast, Minten is performing exceptionally well with the Bruins and could potentially secure a valuable draft pick in 2026 should the Leafs not conclude the season among the top five picks.
Pelley is scheduled to speak to news reporters regarding this determination at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
