Sources indicate that Mark Sanchez, previously a quarterback in the National Football League and currently a commentator for Fox Sports, was involved in a stabbing incident in Indianapolis this past Saturday, according to information shared by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Sanchez, aged 38, is reported to be in a stable state, receiving treatment and recovering in a local medical facility.
He had been scheduled to provide commentary for the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, taking place at the Colts’ home stadium, but he will be unable to fulfill those duties.
“Mark Sanchez experienced an injury in Indianapolis on Saturday. He is currently being treated at a hospital and is in stable condition,” stated a release from Fox Sports on Saturday.
“We express our deep appreciation to the medical professionals for their excellent care and support. Our thoughts are with Mark during this time, and we ask everyone to respect the privacy of Mark and his family.”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department issued a public statement regarding the incident that took place on Saturday, which occurred in the vicinity of Senate Avenue and West Washington Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
The “physical altercation” involved two adult men, and as a result, one individual sustained cuts, while the other experienced “injuries that appear to be consistent with stab wounds,” according to the IMPD.
Police authorities believe that the incident was an isolated event between the two individuals involved and not an indiscriminate act of violence, according to the official statement.
“Both individuals, who are not residents of the local area, have been identified,” the IMPD statement noted. “Detectives specializing in aggravated assault from the IMPD are actively pursuing the investigation and have examined video evidence related to the incident. Both men received medical attention. The man who sustained the apparent stab wounds is currently hospitalized and in stable condition.
“The details of the case will be submitted to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a decision regarding potential charges.”
Before starting his career in sports broadcasting, Sanchez played in the NFL for a decade. He was selected by the New York Jets as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, coming from the University of Southern California (USC). During his time playing for head coach Rex Ryan, Sanchez led the Jets to two consecutive AFC championship game appearances during his initial two seasons in the league.
After spending five seasons with the New York Jets, Sanchez concluded his playing career as a backup quarterback, with stints in Philadelphia (2014-15), Denver (2016), Dallas (2016), Chicago (2017) and Washington (2018).
