“The Query Box” is back, spotlighting Nemanja Matic.
In each release of FourFourTwo, we dedicate a segment to readers’ inquiries, directing them towards a figure in the soccer sphere via “The Query Box.” This section aims to deepen your connection with prominent individuals.
Answering a range of questions is Matic, who has previously represented Manchester United, Chelsea, and Roma.
Matic’s transfer to Chelsea occurred in 2009 for approximately £1.5 million. However, during his initial tenure with Chelsea, he saw limited playtime and was loaned to the Dutch team Vitesse for the 2010/11 season. In January 2011, Matic moved to Benfica as part of the deal that brought David Luiz to Chelsea.
While in Portugal, Matic evolved into a significant defensive midfielder. Under coach Jorge Jesus, he transitioned from a playmaker role. He was recognized as the Primeira Liga Player of the Year for his displays in the 2012/13 season, also achieving Taca da Liga and Primeira Liga titles with Benfica.
Following his notable period in Portugal, Matic went back to Chelsea in January 2014 for a sum of £21 million.
He rose to become a vital member of the Blues, building a formidable midfield partnership alongside Cesc Fabregas. During his second spell with the team, he secured two Premier League titles and one League Cup. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2014/15 season.
In July 2017, Matic reunited with his former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, by signing with Manchester United. He was with the club until 2022, during which time his goal against Crystal Palace was recognized as Manchester United’s Goal of the Season.
After a time at Roma – again, under Mourinho – he transferred to Rennes in 2023, then to Lyon in 2024. By August 2025, he was with the Serie A team Sassuolo, where he is presently active.
Internationally, Matic first played for Serbia in 2008, earning 48 appearances, which included being part of the team at the 2018 World Cup, before he stepped back from international games in 2020.
