Mertens & Kudermetova Triumph at Wimbledon

In the Wimbledon women’s doubles championship match, Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova rallied to overcome Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei, securing their inaugural Grand Slam title as a team.

Mertens and Kudermetova, seeded eighth, prevailed over the Latvian-Taiwanese duo with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court this past Sunday.

This victory marked the first major championship for Kudermetova, representing Russia, who previously faced defeat against Hsieh and Mertens of Belgium in the Wimbledon women’s doubles final four years prior.

For Mertens, this win signified her fifth major women’s doubles title, leaving her just one French Open victory away from achieving the prestigious career Grand Slam.

“Some years prior, I participated in the final here opposing Elise – I suffered a loss, and the experience was deeply disheartening,” Kudermetova expressed.

“On this day, I affirmed to myself, ‘This is what I truly desire’.”

Ostapenko – the victor of the 2017 French Open singles competition – and Hsieh also experienced a defeat in the Australian Open final held in January.
