It appears that Yassine Cheuko, who serves as Lionel Messi’s bodyguard, might have been overly enthusiastic while on duty at the Leagues Cup.
Following a post-match incident where Cheuko entered the playing field to separate some Atlas players from the Inter Miami star, the League Cup disciplinary panel declared that he would be prohibited from entering any technical zones for the remainder of the tournament, which is set to conclude on August 31. Additionally, Inter Miami was fined an unspecified sum.
The complete announcement stated:
Following the Inter Miami CF vs. Club Atlas game on July 30, an individual linked to Inter Miami exhibited unsuitable behavior by accessing restricted locations without possessing the required event authorization. As per the Leagues Cup 2025 Tournament Regulations, the Disciplinary Committee has ruled that the involved person is banned from all technical areas throughout the remainder of Leagues Cup 2025. Furthermore, Inter Miami CF has been issued a confidential fine.
ESPN has identified Cheuko as the member of Inter Miami’s representation.
The event unfolded Wednesday following Inter Miami’s 2-1 triumph over Atlas. A number of players gathered near the center of the field, and Cheuko entered the scene to physically halt the confrontation. He is the individual with a shaved head, a trimmed beard, and a black Miami T-shirt visible in the video provided.
Atlas players were dissatisfied with Cheuko’s involvement. Defender Matheus Doria, as reported by ESPN, urged that the regulations be enforced in this instance:
“We are aware that our administration operates proficiently and will address the situation. I recognize that Messi’s bodyguard is present to shield Messi from potential fan intrusions, but he lacks the authority to intervene between players,” Doria stated.
“It’s not within our purview to comment extensively, but the administration and Leagues Cup officials have observed the incident and will manage permissible and prohibited actions. Safeguarding not only Messi but also the other players, and ensuring their physical well-being, is acceptable. However, disagreements will arise if it pertains to other matters. Ultimately, I lack the authority to take any action.”
Since Messi’s tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, Cheuko has been a consistent presence by his side. Contrary to previous reports, he has no prior experience as a Navy SEAL or professional MMA fighter. Nevertheless, he has previously ventured onto the field to safeguard the eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient.
In April, Inter Miami barred Cheuko from being present on the sideline during MLS matches, despite his continued employment with the team.
