The New York Mets have reassigned right-handed pitcher Kodai Senga to their developmental system. Senga, a recognized starter in his third season with the Mets, is being sent down following a period of inconsistent performance during the preceding months.
The Mets communicated the transaction Friday, concurrently declaring the reinstatement of catcher Francisco Alvarez. Wander Suero, an experienced RHP with time spent on various MLB teams, will be integrated into the major-league roster to fill Senga’s position.
Senga transitioned to the Mets from the Nippon Professional Baseball league in 2023. He achieved recognized statistics that season, posting a 2.98 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 166 1/3 innings pitched in 29 starts.
But Senga participated in just a single game the previous season, being sidelined for the remainder of the year as a result of injuries affecting his shoulder and calf.
Upon returning to the field this season, Senga’s year commenced satisfactorily, but his performance declined in recent weeks. His ERA stood at 5.25 throughout three starts in July and 6.18 during six starts in August.
In total, Senga possesses a 3.02 ERA in 22 starts this season, encompassing 113 1/3 innings pitched.
The action occurs as New York is attempting to secure a playoff berth, with seven series remaining in the season. The Mets hold the second position in the NL East, trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by six games as of Friday.
The team’s 75-65 record places them in the third and concluding NL wild-card position.
