The New York Mets are reportedly sending veteran infielder Jeff McNeil to the Athletics, according to information from ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
As part of the exchange, the Mets are set to acquire an undisclosed minor league pitcher from the A’s, as indicated by the report. Furthermore, the Mets will provide funds to the A’s to assist in covering McNeil’s $15.75 million remuneration and an additional $2 million for his team option buyout for the upcoming season.
At 33 years old, McNeil has spent his entire eight-year Major League Baseball tenure with the Mets. He garnered Rookie of the Year consideration during his debut season in 2018 and secured his initial All-Star selection in 2019, followed by another All-Star nod in 2022, a year in which he topped the National League with a .326 batting average.

Throughout his professional career, McNeil has achieved a batting line of .284/.351/.428, averaging 10 long balls, 46 runs batted in, and 4.6 base thefts annually.
His offensive output has seen a decline since the 2023 season, with batting averages of .238 and .243 over the past two campaigns. In 2025, his final line was .243/.355/.411, accompanied by 12 homers, 54 RBI, and 3 stolen bases.
McNeil’s role became redundant after the Mets obtained second baseman Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers in November, a transaction that involved sending Brandon Nimmo, another established Mets player, in return.
This deal involving McNeil represents a continuation of substantial roster adjustments for the New York franchise this offseason. They previously saw All-Star power hitter Pete Alonso depart for the Orioles and All-Star relief pitcher Edwin Díaz join the Dodgers through free agency. To compensate for these losses, the Mets have brought in infielder Jorge Polanco and bullpen arm Luke Weaver.
