Affiliates of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), recognized as one of Mexico’s most formidable and feared criminal organizations, have ignited businesses and erected fiery barricades following the demise of El Mencho.
The Mexican Open organizers issued a declaration stating that “the rumored cancellation of the event due to security concerns in Jalisco is baseless”.
The statement conveyed: “The competition will proceed as planned, and all tournament functions are operating without interruption.
“We maintain continuous collaboration and constant dialogue with federal, state, and local authorities, strictly adhering to the established safety protocols.”
British athletes Katie Boulter and Heather Watson are scheduled to participate in the Merida Open in Mexico this week.
The tournament is taking place in the state of Yucatan, a region that appears to have remained largely unaffected by the turmoil.
Boulter is set to compete against Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia on Monday, while Watson will face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Tuesday.
Reuters indicated that a men’s soccer game between Queretaro and FC Juarez, alongside a women’s match involving Chivas and America, have both been postponed indefinitely.
The agency also reported that a fixture involving Necaxa and Queretaro in Aguascalientes was suspended when players exited the field after perceiving loud disturbances outside Estadio Victoria. The game later recommenced.
