MLB Trade Deadline: Live Updates, Duran to Phillies, Helsley to Mets

The 2025 MLB roster swap period is rapidly approaching, with numerous clubs actively engaged in maneuvers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks informally initiated activity the preceding week by sending first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several other teams became involved over the weekend. The Yankees finalized two deals bringing in Ryan McMahon and Ahmed Rosario, and the Mets acquired Gregory Soto.

This week commenced with a surprise, as a potential trade candidate, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, was placed on administrative leave (non-disciplinary) through Aug. 31 in relation to an inquiry regarding sports-related wagering. Concurrently, another prominent player of interest, Diamondbacks All-Star 3B Eugenio Suárez, fortunately avoided significant injury after being struck on the hand by a pitched ball Monday.

On Wednesday, the Reds secured Ke’Bryan Hayes from the Pirates, with the compensation consisting of reliever Taylor Rogers and 20-year-old shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura. Also on Wednesday, Taylor’s sibling, Tyler Rogers, was sent from the Giants to the Mets for a substantial package, as per reports. Going to San Francisco are right-hander José Butto, outfield prospect Drew Gilbert and right-handed pitching prospect Blade Tidwell, a noteworthy return for a short-term reliever.

Subsequently, the flow of closer deals intensified, with Twins closer Jhoan Duran being sent to the Phillies just prior to reports emerging of Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley moving to the Mets. Both were acquired in return for a selection of prospects, with the value assigned to relief pitching appearing quite elevated and seemingly increasing.

The deadline is 6 p.m. ET Thursday.

In the interim, here is a comprehensive overview of the activities undertaken by MLB teams:
