In observing the milestone of Major League Soccer’s history, the organization has revealed the MLS Archive Collection, presenting a set of 10 new classic-inspired jerseys for teams across the league. While some of these offerings echo recognizable styles from the past, others seem to loosely interpret the concept of what constitutes a throwback. For original MLS clubs now reflecting on three decades of history, or those whose branding has undergone transformations, revisiting past aesthetics is logical. However, this approach feels less appropriate for certain other teams.
This mirrors the scenario from the previous season when Inter Miami received a throwback jersey. Despite its aesthetic nice, assigning a throwback to a team that debuted in 2020 feels premature. Yet, with the presence of Lionel Messi, unconventional choices become permissible. Rest assured, this season’s collection includes an even more questionable example, featuring a team with merely three seasons of MLS participation. Nonetheless, adhering to tradition, these jerseys demand a ranking from least to most impressive, so let’s commence.
10. Charlotte FC
There are numerous elements at play here, and many are not favorable. The crown emblem is commendable, yet the ensemble evokes a Seattle Sounders aesthetic. Moreover, the fact that Charlotte commenced play in 2022 and is already receiving a throwback raises eyebrows. Charlotte possesses a rich soccer heritage, though it doesn’t directly correlate with this specific club. Even when assessing solely on design, there’s potential for refinement.
9. Nashville SC
Observe, Charlotte. Nashville arguably holds a slightly stronger claim, originating from the United Soccer League. However, their design seems to be inspired by Austin Powers’ “Groovy baby” catchphrase. Nashville boasts appealing colors and has showcased commendable alternate designs. Yet, for this endeavor, they seemingly applied haphazard elements onto a white jersey and deemed it complete.
8. D.C. United
Enthusiasm for men’s soccer in the District is currently subdued, and this jersey is unlikely to ignite much excitement. It serves as a nod to history, hearkening back to their inaugural season, but it lacks extravagance. It will serve those with an affinity for classics, it remains a decent choice, although superior options exist on this roster.
7. New England Revolution
This is reasonable, and the incorporation of the crayon flag throughout the jersey’s upper portion represents a commendable touch, yet it feels incomplete.
6. Colorado Rapids
The unadorned jersey is elevated by an exceptional emblem. The Rapids would be applauded should they revert to this branding permanently, however, even without this change, reintroducing it into the rotation is beneficial.
5. Columbus Crew
Similar to New England, this jersey seems to lack a certain element. The arrangement is enhanced due to the color palette selection, rendering the jersey reminiscent of a miner, in congruence with the emblem, which is sufficient to elevate its ranking. However, a considerable disparity separates this from the subsequent four jerseys on this enumeration.
4. Seattle Sounders
The orca emblem is greatly admired. The shades and embellishments are captivating, and the sleeves contribute significantly. Seattle consistently produces exceptional jerseys, and this iteration sustains their legacy.
3. Minnesota United
It was challenging to refrain from assigning this the top position. The numerals, typography, and gradient are exceptional. Minnesota United excelled in referencing their heritage in this design, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing ensemble on the field.
2. San Jose Earthquakes (Clash)
The name Clash was memorable, and its removal from regular usage is unfortunate. Nevertheless, this jersey embodies the essence of the 1970s. It’s audacious and energetic, eliciting either adoration or aversion, with no middle ground. Nostalgia might have propelled this above Minnesota, but ultimate authority resides here.
1. FC Dallas (Burn)
Another rebranding deserving of a permanent return, FC Dallas has achieved unparalleled success with this design. In contrast to the Clash, it adopts a more conservative approach, yet this also results in a remarkable jersey suitable for both athletic and casual contexts. Additionally, the emblem is striking.
