The Australian Women’s squad once more demonstrated their strength in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, securing a 107-run victory over the Pakistani Women’s team in the 9th match held at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama.
Beth Mooney shines with a remarkable century
Pakistan elected to field after winning the coin toss, and while they achieved some early successes, Beth Mooney’s impressive century propelled the Australian team to a total of 221 for 9 over their allotted 50 overs. Mooney’s outstanding innings of 109 runs from 114 balls, including 11 well-placed shots, was the cornerstone of the entire innings.
Australia faced challenges early on as openers Alyssa Healy (20) and Phoebe Litchfield (10) were dismissed quickly, followed by the rapid losses of Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland. However, Mooney remained steadfast amidst the collapse, forming a vital partnership with Alana King, who contributed a swift 51 runs from 49 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. The duo successfully recovered Australia from a precarious 85 for 6 to achieve a competitive total. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu was the most effective bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 37 runs, while Rameen Shamim (2/29) and Sana Fatima (2/49) also delivered notable performances.
Pakistan’s batting struggles under pressure
In pursuit of 222 for the win, Pakistan’s batting lineup was unable to establish any momentum against the consistent Australian bowling attack. Only Sidra Ameen provided some stability with a steady 35 from 52 balls, but wickets fell regularly. None of the other batters managed to create substantial partnerships, as the Australian bowlers maintained unwavering pressure throughout the innings.
Kim Garth shone with the ball, delivering an excellent spell of 3 for 14 in 6 overs, including the crucial dismissals of Sidra Nawaz and Eyman Fatima. Megan Schutt and Sutherland supported her efforts with two wickets each, while King, Ashleigh Gardner, and Georgia Wareham each took one wicket. Pakistan was eventually bowled out for just 114 in 36.3 overs, falling far short of the required score.
Mooney’s brilliant innings earned her the Player of the Match award, as her contribution was crucial in securing Australia’s convincing victory.
