Following his departure from Fenerbahçe, José Mourinho has surprisingly resurfaced in the managerial sphere, now at the helm of Benfica.
The irony lies in the fact that it was a Champions League playoff defeat against this very Portuguese team in late August that initially led to the Turkish club’s separation from the experienced 62-year-old.
However, after a 3-2 setback against Qarabag in a recent tournament match, where Benfica had initially secured a two-goal advantage, the club promptly decided to split with Bruno Lage and sought the expertise of a well-known figure to take charge.
This move signifies a homecoming to the location where his managerial journey commenced back in 2000. Mourinho’s appointment as Benfica’s head coach marked the beginning of his career, but his initial tenure lasted a mere nine league matches before his departure.
This event signifies Mourinho’s return to coaching in his native country for the first time since he left Porto to join Chelsea back in 2004.
