Jaime Munguia failed a post-fight drug test for exogenous testosterone metabolites after he defeated Bruno Surace on May 3 via unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Of course, Munguia and his team denied any intentional wrongdoing and blamed tainted substances for the positive result.
Unfortunately for the Mexican-born boxer, his B-sample has also come back positive, which means Munguia could face some discipline as a result, per longtime boxing reporter, Mike Coppinger. Furthermore, his win over Surace — who knocked Munguia out in the first fight — will likely be overturned to a no contest (NC).
Of course, Team Munguia released a statement once again proclaiming innocence.
“Today, we can confirm that Jaime Munguía’s B-sample has been opened and analyzed, and consistent with the A-sample, was also positive. Jaime was present in Utah for the opening of the B-sample, demonstrating his respect for the process and his full commitment to transparency and cooperation at every step. We want to reiterate that this outcome does not change our position: Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally ingest any banned substance. We remain steadfast in the belief that this result was caused by contamination, and we are continuing to take every possible step to identify the source.”
The statement went on to reveal that the team is cooperating fully and are currently sending all supplements taken by Munguia to WADA-accredited labs for further testing in an attempt to get to the source of the problem.
“I have spent my entire career and life doing things the right way and this is no exception,” said Munguia in his own statement. “I love boxing, and I am the first one who wants to clear everything up because boxing is my life. I can’t wait to get back in the ring. We’re going to prove that we never disrespected the sport, my opponents, or misled the fans.”
It doesn’t help that Jermall Charlo just weeks before Munguia failed a drug test went on record to say that the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) is rampant in the sport of boxing, but fighters and camps have gotten better at micro-dosing in order to not get caught.
Munguia’s is currently 45-2, with his defeats coming at the hands of longtime great, Canelo Alvarez, and the aforementioned Bruno Surace.
