Murphy (NL), Vogt (AL) Named 2025 MLB Manager of the Year

The week dedicated to accolades in Major League Baseball persisted on Tuesday. Previously, Nick Kurtz of the Athletics secured the American League Rookie of the Year Award for 2025, and Drake Baldwin of the Braves earned the Jackie Robinson Award in the NL. The Cy Young honorees in each league are slated to be revealed on Wednesday night, with the Most Valuable Player awards concluding the week on Thursday. Regarding Tuesday’s events, the AL and NL Managers of the Year were announced.

These honors are determined by the votes of 30 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America (comprising two individuals per MLB city in each league). The votes were cast prior to the commencement of the playoffs, indicating that only regular-season performances are considered.

Therefore, presented here are the recipients of MLB’s Manager of the Year award for 2025.

Murphy achieves consecutive NL wins

For the second consecutive year, Pat Murphy of the Brewers has been named NL Manager of the Year. Murphy emerged victorious in the voting process, surpassing the other two finalists, Terry Francona of the Reds and Rob Thomson of the Phillies. The voting results are as follows:

This season, Murphy guided the Brewers to a league-leading 97-65 record, securing both the NL Central title and the top overall seed in the postseason. Murphy’s and the Brewers’ triumph in 2025 transpired once again despite a modest payroll and the departure of several talented players – notably, star shortstop Willy Adames, who entered into a free-agent agreement with the Giants during the previous offseason. Murphy’s 2025 team was characterized by its precise fielding and base running, a formidable lineup, and an efficiently managed bullpen. Murphy secured the award in 2024 following a 93-win season in Milwaukee and a division championship. During the playoffs, the Brewers were defeated by the Dodgers in the NLCS, but they reached that stage by overcoming their division rivals, the Cubs, and former Brewers manager Craig Counsell in the NLDS.

Murphy is the first individual to win the NL Manager of the Year award in consecutive years since Bobby Cox of the Braves accomplished this feat in 2004 and 2005. In general terms, he represents the first repeat victor since Kevin Cash of the Rays obtained the AL award in 2020 and 2021.

Vogt secures another AL victory

Steven Vogt of the Guardians has again been named AL Manager of the Year, prevailing in the balloting process over his fellow nominees John Schneider of the Blue Jays and Dan Wilson of the Mariners. The complete voting breakdown is detailed below:

Vogt successfully steered Cleveland to 88 victories and an AL Central title, surpassing the highly favored Tigers. Vogt’s candidacy for the award gained momentum towards the conclusion of the season, owing to a remarkable comeback orchestrated by the Guardians. Cleveland surmounted a deficit of 15 ½ games in the AL Central, marking the most significant comeback in the divisional era (i.e., since MLB’s division into divisions in 1969). Moreover, Vogt’s Guardians trailed the Tigers by 14 games as recently as July 9 and by 9 ½ games as recently as Sept. 10. Cleveland’s 20-7 record in September played a pivotal role in that comeback, thereby contributing to Vogt’s receipt of the award. This is, of course, to make no mention of the Guardians’ limited payroll and the ownership’s minimal commitment to achieving victory.

Vogt has now achieved this honor in each of his initial two seasons as a manager in MLB.
