An unintentional headbutt early in the second round significantly altered the bout, causing a severe gash above Lopez’s right eye. Throughout a large portion of the match, crimson liquid flowed down his face, necessitating inspections of the wound by officials at ringside prior to the third and fourth rounds.
Despite the injury, Lopez maintained his offensive charge, exchanging blows with Gallegos (22-4-1, 19 KOs). Gallegos countered effectively with consistent aggression and strikes to the body, which managed to impede the undefeated challenger during the intermediate stages of the fight.
The seventh round featured the most intense incident of the encounter, as Gallegos floored Lopez with a concise right-hand punch amidst a flurry of activity. Lopez promptly got back on his feet and continued to engage for the remaining minute of the round, notwithstanding the puffiness around his injured eye.
Subsequently in the same round, Gallegos also sustained a laceration, resulting in both combatants displaying visible injuries as the match progressed towards its conclusion.
Lopez reasserted his dominance in the eighth round, re-employing his jab and delivering a right hand that momentarily disoriented Gallegos. The Mexican pugilist tried to clinch, but Lopez advanced relentlessly with successive combinations until the official stepped in.
“My sole focus in that ring was on legends like Diego Corrales, on Marvin Hagler, on championship-level fighting,” Lopez declared post-bout. “Once I had him caught, I was not going to release the pressure.”
This victory preserves Lopez’s undefeated record and sustains his standing within the top fifteen of the prominent sanctioning organizations’ light heavyweight divisions.
