NBA Finals: Spurs hit record 14 3s, blow 29-point lead to Knicks in Game 4.

The San Antonio Spurs commenced their game on Wednesday evening at Madison Square Garden.

Paced by an exceptional initial period from Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs established a 76-49 advantage against the New York Knicks by halftime of Game 4 of the NBA Finals. This 27-point lead in the first half stood as the greatest visiting team’s halftime margin in NBA Finals history, discounting the 2020 COVID-19 bubble season, and the third-highest ever recorded.

Nevertheless, this lead astonishingly proved insufficient to defeat the Knicks. The Knicks mounted a full recovery from a 29-point deficit to clinch an astonishing 107-106 victory against the Spurs. This represented the most significant comeback in NBA Finals annals, granting them a 3-1 series lead and electrifying Madison Square Garden.

Although it ultimately bore no consequence in the latter stages, the Spurs’ first-half offensive explosion originated from an incredible display of shooting. San Antonio successfully converted 14 of 26 attempts from beyond the arc during the initial 24 minutes. This established a new record for the highest number of successful 3-pointers in a single half during the NBA Finals.

Devin Vassell spearheaded the long-range shooting effort in the first period. He sank all four of his 3-point attempts and concluded the half with 15 points. Wembanyama, despite accumulating a team-best 16 points and six rebounds, managed to hit just one of his five attempts from downtown. Furthermore, he registered 13 of his 16 points within the initial quarter.

However, even with his difficulties from long range, the Spurs effortlessly built their substantial lead. Conversely, the Knicks’ shooting performance was subpar. They converted only 4 of 12 attempts from beyond the arc in the first half. OG Anunoby was responsible for half of their successful 3-point shots. Overall, the Knicks tallied merely 15 field goals, which was just one more than the Spurs’ total solely from 3-pointers.

Ultimately, however, it was Anunoby who sealed the victory for the Knicks. He amassed 33 points and executed an astonishing tip-in during the closing moments to propel the Knicks to their narrow one-point triumph.

The Spurs managed to convert only an additional three shots from beyond the arc during the latter half. The Knicks, spearheaded by Jalen Brunson’s 36 points, ultimately finished the game shooting 15-of-32 from 3-point range.

The Knicks will now proceed to Game 5 on Saturday evening holding a 3-1 series advantage. They stand merely one victory away from clinching what would mark their inaugural championship since 1973.
