Time with the Spurs: 1997-present
Notable Accomplishments: Four NBA Championships, Three NBA Finals MVP Awards, Two NBA MVP Awards, 13 All-Star Selections, 9/3/1 All-NBA Team Selections, 1998 Rookie of the Year Award, Eight All-Defensive Team Selections
Taking a piece from my shared article with Columnist Ethan S., where we assessed the Spurs’ and Mavericks’ odds of reaching the NBA Finals this particular season, I referenced Tim Duncan in the following way:
“With 14 years already completed (it’s remarkable how time flies), along with two MVP awards and four championships, Duncan has solidified his place as the greatest player to ever occupy his position in the NBA. His induction into the Hall of Fame is guaranteed. He is among the top 15 players in the history of the game. If he manages to secure a few more titles, he might even climb into the top 10 when his career concludes.”
I remain committed to those remarks. I also dare anyone to name an achievement that has eluded Duncan throughout his career. He’s captured four championships, three Finals MVP trophies, and two regular season MVP awards. Duncan’s resume also includes selections as an All-Star, All-Defense, All-NBA honoree, and Rookie of the Year.
In simple terms, “The Big Fundamental” embodies the San Antonio Spurs franchise.
No other player in the Spurs’ history can compare to what Duncan has contributed to the franchise. He holds every significant statistical record for the team, except for assists and steals.
I could further highlight that he has maintained career averages of 21 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, but you likely understand the extent of his accomplishments already.
It is astounding to consider that he has participated in well over 1,000 games throughout his career already.
How many seasons does he have remaining?
Only the future can reveal that answer, but my estimation is around three more. In all candor, he has attained every possible accomplishment in the NBA.
Few individuals can claim the same.
